About Matt's Greenhouse

Family Owned, Family Values

Matt Mohrfeld established Matt's Greenhouse in 1977 and just celebrated 40 years in the greenhouse industry! After growing up youngest of eight siblings on a farm in southeast Iowa, he went on to study agronomy at Iowa State University before starting his own business in Fort Madison, Iowa. Starting out as a retail garden center, Matt later diversified into a wholesale bedding plant operation, growing spring bedding plants, seasonal blooming plants and a large selection of poinsettias. This business has expanded to a three-state market with a selling radius of over 200 miles. Matt prides himself not only on quality plants, but also the marketing and merchandising assistance he provides to his customers. Matt’s Greenhouse is now the fifth largest wholesale greenhouse operation in the State of Iowa.

Although Matt spends long hours at the greenhouse every day, he believes it is important to give back to the community by volunteering 100’s of hours teaching and coaching kids of all ages (yes, adults too) the importance of a healthy lifestyle through exercise and nutrition. “Coach Matt” can be seen at YMCA swim meets, Couch to 5K training events and running with the Holy Trinity cross country team. Often you will see Matt preparing and training for the next race to check off his ever growing “bucket” list. He also supports community development programs through the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street and Economic Development Groups by serving on various committees and is a former Chairman of the Lee County Board of Supervisors.

Matt is fortunate to have his wife, Beth and son, Jacob, supporting him in the ever changing and ever demanding greenhouse business. Even though Jacob is now in high school and busy with his own activities, he still manages to spend time helping his dad and hanging out at the greenhouse. You may see him mowing or cleaning the vehicle fleet. It is not unusual to see the Mohrfeld’s participating in a 5k event together or coaching and/or cheering for Jacob at a swim meet, cross country race or triathlon. Matt and Beth firmly believe living a healthy lifestyle and being physically active is an important component in balancing family and a successful career.

Matt is totally involved in every aspect of the greenhouse business. He is continuously looking at ways to improve and grow the business, to stay on top of new innovations, and to consistently produce Hi-Performance plants that live up to his brand. Matt is always available to help answer any questions or concerns you might have. Feel free to call or e-mail. Toll free: (877) 372-3819  |  e-mail:

Ted Goldie, Operations Manager started with Matt’s Greenhouse in May of 2009. Ted’s greenhouse career started part-time at a greenhouse while still in high school and after college he came back to the industry full-time. Ted’s main responsibility is our Operations Manager but is also heavily involved many aspects of the greenhouse business from growing plants to marketing and sales. During our “busy” season (which seems to be year round) you might see Ted putting his mechanical skills to work on the irrigation booms, building greenhouses or stepping in to deliver plants…he’s even been known to grill up yummy Sunday lunches for our employees in April and May. After the long hours and hot days spent at the greenhouse, Ted enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Mindy, and their children Phillip and Claire. The Goldie family loves to travel up north to Minnesota to fish and enjoy nature. They even sneak in several concerts and music festivals throughout the year. Ted is active in our community and is always willing to lend a hand. He volunteers many hours for the Fort Madison Tri-State Rodeo.

Ted is highly trained and ready to answer any questions you may have. He will be glad to help you with all aspects of your greenhouse needs. Give him a call at 319-470-3800 or e-mail him at:

Bill Boehm, Head Grower has been in the greenhouse business for over 35 years and joined our management team in 2011.  Bill graduated Southern Illinois University with a Bachelors Degree in Plant & Soil Science and puts that knowledge and expertise to work on a daily basis.  Bill walks miles throughout the greenhouses daily checking every detail to make sure the temperature, light and water is right for proper plant growth.   He is responsible for overseeing our seven acre greenhouse production area and takes great pride in growing beautiful, healthy plants.  In his free time, Bill enjoys reading and watching his favorite sports – cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals and his favorite Illinois teams in football and basketball.

Bill can be reached by calling 319-372-3819 or e-mail him at:

Lee Barnes, Sales & Customer Development joined the Matt’s Greenhouse management team in February of 2017.  He brings 17 years of sales and customer service experience to this newly created position.  Lee’s resume is impressive with his college career in engineering to graduating from the Police Academy to sales & delivery experience in beer distribution and most recently customer service at a car dealership.  Lee’s been on the fast track learning the nuts and bolts of this fast-paced industry.  He has survived his first busy spring season and now is hitting the pavement hard meeting customers.  When he is not on the road, you might notice that Lee is with the maintenance crew building greenhouses, inspecting plant inventory or reading about the latest and greatest trends in the greenhouse industry.   On weekends and during free time Lee loves spending quality time with his children, Brock & Taylor either coaching or attending their high school sporting events, traveling to drag races or tinkering around on his favorite car.  Lee and his wife Carla enjoy running, cycling and tropical vacations and not necessarily in that order!

We welcome Lee and encourage you to give him a call to discuss your next order at 319-470-9933 or email:

Chris Plate, Maintenance Manager has been with Matt’s Greenhouse since 2015.  After high school Chris graduated OMC Training and received his certification in marine mechanics then as time went on he found himself working a variety of jobs in the grain industry – most recently as superintendent at a grain elevator.  His diverse agricultural background and mechanical know-how makes him a perfect fit at Matt’s Greenhouse.  Matt refers to Chris as “the purveyor of all things maintained and built”.  Chris oversees all facility maintenance, including machines, mechanical systems and seven acres of greenhouses.  When not in maintenance and repair mode, Chris buckles up his seatbelt and heads down the road as one of our customers “favorite delivery guys”.  During his free time Chris and his wife Cathy like to enjoy the great outdoors camping, fishing and boating with their kids - Sladen and Nakodah.

Chris can be reached by calling 319-372-3819 or email

Kim Culbertson, Office Manager started with Matt’s Greenhouse management team in 2011.  She graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a focus in Business Management.  Kim’s resume is extensive with experience in county government, the tourism industry, and economic development – just to name a few!    Her attention to detail, organizational and customer service skills make our office run smoothly.  Kim is responsible for accounts receivable/payable, customer invoicing and maintaining all company files.  She has been known to pitch in wherever needed from picking up kids at school, baking a birthday cake and on occasion has helped on the production line.   Her commitment and years of experience are of great value to Matt and the management team.  Kim and her husband Mike have two daughters – Taylor & her husband Kurt live in Fort Madison and Kayla recently moved to Cedar Rapids.  The Culbertson’s are enjoying the “empty nest”, love to travel and cheer for their favorite teams – St. Louis Cardinals (Kim), Cubs (Mike) and the Iowa Hawkeyes!
